Why not try Morse Code instead?

Inexplicable Windows error message of the day, seen when the connection was interrupted while trying to copy files to a network drive:

“The semaphore timeout period has expired.”

I understand why the message happened in this case, but what in the world is a semaphore timeout period? Apparently it’s a fairly common error, too… but it’s just so cryptic.

Guaranteeing more introvert-related search results…

Amusing spoof of the Friendster community site: Introvertster. I’ve seen this link on way too many blogs, and shy guy that I am, I couldn’t resist succumbing to the meme as well…

Yet more from the search files

A few amusing entries culled from the search logs, as I usually post in lieu of interesting content when nothing’s going on in my life:

free classified advertisements in all shipping companies in south america – Seems to be a rather odd thing to search for… considering the fact that this was a non-native speaker, however, and considering where the search led, I’m pleased to see that it was spelled correctly.

dowload site’s – Too bad this non-native speaker didn’t fare so well…

playing ddr with sandals – From personal experience, I can say that this is not the greatest idea, something with which a number of the other search results seem to agree…

Perhaps the most popularity I’ve ever seen…

Hm. While googling for my nickname, I discovered that my font page has been indexed by the web popularity index Popdex. Quite neat… and the commentary on a number of the indexed blogs is quite flattering.

Place Bets Now!

Hee! After all the searches I’ve gotten for buckaroo bonzi, I finally found a searcher in my logs who made the opposite mistake: banzai purple gorilla.

Now all I need to do is make a reference to that faux-Japanese betting game show, and I’ll really see the hits start pouring in. Anyone wanna bet when I’ll end up with a search for something like “bonzi game show”? ::chuckle::

Don’t judge a book by its…reviews

Yet another pointless but amusing link found via my LiveJournal friends list: Amazon World selects from among the most interesting Amazon.com reader reviews and posts samplings for all to see. Some of them are a bit unusual, perhaps even un-review-like, but nonetheless literate and creative; a majority of the entries, however, are the work of clueless, semi-literate teenagers, accompanied by appropriately snarky comments from the Amazon World maintainer. Honestly, that latter category of reviews is enough to make me want to disown my generation at times…

More press for ‘Spellbound’…

For those who are still interested in the documentary Spellbound and its humble origins (yes, I know, I’ve rambled on about it more than a few times, but I do have my reasons for liking it…), I transcribed an NPR piece on the film in my spare time about a week ago: “‘Spellbound’ Explores Spelling Bee Circuit”. The original clip is still streaming on NPR’s site, at least as of today; listen to it now (requires Windows Media or RealPlayer).

Still more retro game fonts

I’ve uploaded two Super Nintendo font rips to my font page for everyone to enjoy: KongText (Donkey Kong Country) and Yoster Island (Yoshi’s Island, of course).

How do you spell ‘irony’?

Via Google, I stumbled across an extremely interesting article from the Naples Daily News in Naples, FL explaining how, thanks to the documentary film Spellbound, spelling bees for adults have begun to gain some popularity.

Too bad the Naples News’ advertisers would never win one; for some proof, check out the selection of banner ads that I saw accompanying the article. “Anniversarys”? And the paper’s owned by Scripps-Howard, sponsor of the National Spelling Bee, at that…

More font goodness

I’ve added yet another ’80s-era typographical fossil to my font page: behold DPComic, another DeluxePaint font that’s seen in at least one popular web comic to this day.
