Sith happens

Revenge of the Sith is so much better than the previous two Star Wars episodes. Go see it– it’s definitely worth it. And if that’s not enough to convince you, I’ll mention that although Jar Jar appears in a couple scenes, he’s completely silent, the way it ought to be. 🙂

Yeah, I’m geeky enough to have gone to a midnight showing with some friends (hey jalendavi_lady!… and thanks to julian_tempest for saving us a place in the insanely long line).

And I’m glad the theatre’s lost and found managed to find my wallet. That had me worried all night, once I got home and realized it was no longer in my pocket. Sigh, the life of a scatterbrain…

Stupid banner ad of the day

Heh. An interesting tale of banner ads…

I was surfing along and happened to see this banner on a software site that covered multiple platforms:
Your Mac may need a tune-up. Click Start to recommend improvements.

Thinking nothing of it– and thinking it was awfully interesting that they were specifically targeting Mac users– I decided to go ahead and click on the banner to see what they were selling… and I was met with this:

An Apple a day…

I got my graduation present early and haven’t even blogged about it. Which is odd, considering that I’ve been using it for the past several days.

What is it, you ask? A PowerBook G4, with 1.67GHz processor and 15″ widescreen display.

Yep, it’s official: I’ve made the switch to the Mac platform. I love Mac OS X… all the stability, extensibility and configurability of Unix combined with the user-friendliness of Apple, with all my favorite proprietary graphics and music software available in a native format to boot. ^_^

An en-“lightning” moment

There are times when having a driver’s license would really be nice– like when your network card and USB hub get zapped by a sudden unexpected thunderstorm. ::sigh:: Not that having them immediately would be of much use still, as the Ethernet port in my room was similarly struck…

I would’ve unplugged my network cable if I’d known it was coming! It was rather sudden, though, so I didn’t have the opportunity– and of course, the storm had to start up when I wasn’t able to get to the computer. ::grumble::

(And if you’re wondering how I’m posting this… two words: internet café. On campus, of course…)

Well, at least I can study somewhere…

I’ve been a bit busy lately, but some fairly good news came in a couple days ago: I was accepted for graduate study at the University of Georgia.

I’m still waiting to hear from Georgia State before I finally make a decision. I could probably survive in Athens (where UGA’s located), but its bus system is even more confusingly mapped out than Macon’s, and it also doesn’t run on Sundays. Plus, the campus is really big, and I can see myself getting lost way too easily. I’d much prefer to be at GSU; not only is the campus somewhat smaller, there’s also a lot more in walking distance in downtown Atlanta, as well as a public transit system that actually runs 7 days a week with more frequent stops.

So… well, we’ll see. I might, by some freakish chance, actually end up getting over my lack of confidence in my (in)ability to drive, though that still seems like quite a longshot…

Confessions of a dyscalculic

Argh. I hope the next three differential equations tests go better than this first one that I took today. Because I did so badly… I haven’t even gotten the grade back, but I know I didn’t even get around to starting a few of the problems. I understood theoretically how each problem was to be solved; I just couldn’t remember how to do the integration quickly enough, and spent several minutes on each problem trying to figure it out, and by the time I’d used those minutes, I didn’t even have time to start on some of the problems.

And yes, I’ve been reviewing calculus notes quite a bit over the past week. Obviously I should’ve put in a lot more time reviewing or something. Come to think of it, I’m not even sure we were expected to remember some of these integration formulas in calculus class!

Argh, sometimes I wish my brain could do this math-type stuff faster; it’s not that I don’t know it, it’s just that I can’t recall it within the time limits of the test. I probably need to go to Student Support Services and get a time extension; it would definitely be helpful here.

Ah well; at least we’re allowed to drop our lowest test grade. I can only hope the remaining ones will go better; if nothing else, I’ll have had more practice!

Yet it’s still the most popular browser…

If you haven’t noticed, I dislike Internet Explorer’s broken rendering of pages about as much as I dislike its lack of security.

Broken how, you ask? Well, here’s a collection of tests from HowToCreate.co.uk to demonstrate:

No, Internet Explorer did not handle it properly

Ah, how I love geeky humor.

And oh, yeah… I was going to quote a few random numbers in the subject line, but as someone on Fark’s comment thread pointed out, they’re copyrighted. See the “search inside” feature for proof.

I am such a font geek

Cooper Tires‘ typographically self-referential logo is rather well-known amongst the typographic community, but it’s hardly the only logo of its ilk.

In fact, I noticed something very similar today while watching someone drink a Slim-Fast shake.

You see, Slim-Fast has a line of diet foods for sale with the brand name of Optima. I’ll give you one guess as to what font the logo is based on.

(For those who don’t get it: check out the font samples for Cooper and Optima.)

I have to wonder whether this is the result of creative typographical wordplay or just laziness. 😀
